Matt Chojnacki is a professional surfer, coach, and surf industry personality from Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
Known as "The Waxhead," he has dedicated his life to surfing—whether riding waves, researching surf history or sharing his passion through coaching and commentary.
As the founder of 'The Art of Trim', Matt has developed a unique surf philosophy focused on purposeful surfing for longevity. His holistic approach blends classic fundamentals with modern performance, emphasising mindfulness, connection to equipment and ocean awareness. Matt is current Australian vintage Longboard Champion. With over 23 years of competitive experience, Matt has surfed in 20+ countries, earned 12 professional event wins, and secured multiple national titles. Beyond competition, he has become a trusted voice in the industry, providing expert analysis for World Surf League (WSL) events and breaking down the nuances of both longboarding and high-performance surfing for a global audience.
A McTavish Surfboards team rider since 2011, Matt has worked closely with Bob and Ben McTavish to refine board models such as the Rincon, Involvement, Noserider, Beatnik, Pinvolvement, and the Tracker. His deep knowledge of traditional surfboard design and performance continues to shape the evolution of longboarding. In 2025 Matt is a brand ambassador for Rash Wetsuits and has a signature Waxhead longboard fin with FCS
Outside of competition and design, Matt is a published surf journalist, content creator, and mentor, dedicated to preserving surf culture and sharing its rich history. Whether coaching, shaping, or storytelling, he believes surfing is more than just a sport—it’s a lifelong pursuit that connects generations through waves, tradition, and innovation.
The nickname "Waxhead" is a nod to 1960s surf culture, when the term described those fully dedicated to the waves. For Matt, it’s a fitting tribute to his lifelong commitment to surfing, surfboard craftsmanship, and the timeless art of trim.
